BREAST REVISION
Why Breast Revision?
Women have very specific ideas about what they want their breasts to look like. Full, perky, and youthful are a few words that usually come to mind.
Unfortunately, the effects of time, pregnancy, and nursing can cause breasts to sag and lose their contoured shape. Due to this, many women have undergone breast augmentation and breast lifts. Unfortunately the aging process continues and our tissues continue to get weaker.
When this happens, it might be time for a breast revision from the professionals at Reflections Cosmetic Surgery in Cartersville, GA.
What Is a Breast Revision?
This medical procedure is used to restore breasts to their former pleasing appearance following a prior breast surgery. This is a combination of procedures aimed at improving a woman’s silhouette so she appears more shapely, youthful, and completely feminine.
With time or incorrect dissection from prior surgery the implants will stretch the tissue and fall out to the sides. People often complain of “implants in their armpits. This can happen at any time. The way to correct this is a capsulorrhaphy. This means making the pocket that holds the implant, known as a capsule, smaller. The implant is removed and the capsulorrhaphy is performed using suture that is permanent. The implant is then replaced back into the pocket. This procedure is also known as an Internal Bra. This will restore the cleavage and bust of your breast, making for a more youthful and feminine appearance.
Sometimes the capsule around the implant may collapse down and not allow enough room for the implant sit in the appropriate desired position. This occurs when the implants have fallen out over time. While the outside lower pocket stretches, the upper inside pocket collapses. Performing a capsulotomy will open up the space for the implant to sit in the correct position. This is essentially cutting the capsule.
During a breast lift, the nipple or areola may be repositioned. When this occurs the scar around the areola can stretch and widen. The areola itself can also stretch. This can be corrected easily under local anesthesia or numbing medication. Sometimes, if the degree is large, then this may require general anesthesia.
Following a breast lift or reduction, the tissues on the lower part of the breast tend to stretch. This is due to gravity, aging, weakening tissues, and surgical technique. The distance from the crease under your breast to the areaola is elongated. This is called Psuedoptosis. The nipple is sitting high but the breast tissue is too low. Often times the nipple is sitting too high because of this phenomenon. This can be corrected often times with combination of an inferior capsulorrhaphy as well as a skin wedge resection. Essentially the pocket is decreased in size and the excess tissue on the lower portion of the breast is removed.
Anticipated Outcomes?
Every woman is different, not only in body but also in mind.
We understand it’s easy to look at a friend’s results after a breast surgery and think you’ll look the same. But the truth is you won’t, simply because you have a different biological and chemical composition.
We urge you to toss out preconceived notions and comparisons. You must also understand that there is a large amount of combinations of procedures to achieve goals.
As this is revision surgery, the tissues have been violated from prior surgeries so there is usually weakened tissues and scar tissue making the revision more difficult. Also, due to the nature of the revision and tissue quality, the outcomes from revisions remains variable.
Our staff will work with you on an individual basis to understand your unique cosmetic goals. Once we know what you hope to achieve, we can strive to deliver those results with safe, effective, and compassionate care.
How Long Do Effects Last?
You already know that every person responds differently to this procedure. It is therefore difficult to realistically estimate how long you’ll enjoy the results of your breast revision.
For many patients, the duration is between 10 and 15 years; others are satisfied with their appearances for much longer. So we confidently say the effects can last a very long time.
Different factors, however, will influence your longevity. One of these is your skin and how well you care for it. Remember that skin is nourished from within, so eating a balanced diet and drinking plenty of water to promote hydration are crucial.
We can also recommend treatments performed in our office to keep your skin looking and feeling its best.
What Can I Expect For Recovery?
Usually the recovery for a breast revision is easier than the initial breast augmentation, if the implant was placed under the muscle, also known as subpectoral.
There is usually less pain and discomfort, however all revision surgeries are different and the degree of repair varies much. Most people are sore and out of commission for about 5 days.
Following that, normal activity can be continued, however, without engaging the chest or lifting more than 20 lbs for six weeks and not stretching the pectoralis muscle. A good supportive surgical bra is needed for approximately six weeks.
