What is a labiaplasty?

A labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that involves altering the labia, which are the folds of skin surrounding the vaginal opening. This procedure is typically done for cosmetic reasons to change the size or shape of the labia minora (the inner lips) or labia majora (the outer lips).

Some individuals may choose to undergo labiaplasty to reduce discomfort or irritation caused by enlarged or asymmetrical labia, while others may opt for it for aesthetic reasons. It’s important for individuals considering this procedure to have a thorough discussion with a qualified medical professional to understand the risks, benefits, and potential outcomes.

Who is a candidate for labiaplasty?

Candidates for labiaplasty typically fall into one of two categories: those who have physical discomfort or functional issues related to their labia, and those who seek the procedure for cosmetic reasons.

  1. Physical discomfort or functional issues:
  • Enlarged or hypertrophic labia minora causing discomfort during physical activities, such as exercise or sexual intercourse.
  • Labial asymmetry that causes discomfort or irritation.
  • Chronic irritation or chafing due to enlarged labia.
  • Difficulty maintaining proper hygiene due to excess labial tissue.
  • Labial protrusion beyond the labia majora, leading to discomfort in tight clothing.
  1. Cosmetic reasons:
  • Desire for a more symmetrical appearance of the labia minora or labia majora.
  • Feeling self-conscious about he size, shape, or appearance of the labia
  • Dissatisfaction with the appearance of the labia, which may impact self-esteem or confidence.

Candidates for labiaplasty should be in good overall health and have realistic expectations about the outcomes of the procedure. It’s essential for individuals considering labiaplasty to have a thorough consultation with a qualified surgeon who can assess their specific concerns and determine whether they are suitable candidates for the procedure. Additionally, candidates should fully understand the potential risks, benefits, and limitations of labiaplasty before making a decision.

When can I resume exercise after a labiaplasty?

After undergoing labiaplasty surgery, we advise refraining from strenuous exercise or activity for a minimum of four to six weeks, with some patients potentially requiring a longer recovery period.

When can I return to work after my labiaplasty?

Most patients are able to return to work 2-4 days after surgery.

How soon can I resume sexual activity after my labiaplasty?

Many patients find they can typically resume sexual activity within six to eight weeks following the procedure. However, it’s important to note that initially, you may experience unusual sensations or discomfort. Please exercise caution and use common sense; if it doesn’t feel right, refrain from forcing it. Wait a few more days until any discomfort has subsided before attempting again.
